While some have likened it to Jan Karons Mitford books, I find it closer in tone to Michael Malones Handling Sin or John Kennedy Tooles Confederacy of Dunces. These revelations take place within the first seven pages and from there we're off! The fast-paced book reads like a movie script (as if Ms. Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind represents the best of Southern humor-its quirky, candid and offers keen observations on the social rules that govern life in a small town.

The latter discovery is made abruptly when the mother of the bastard dumps the child on Miss Julia's doorstep. The two women share the estate of Wesley Lloyd, as they had shared. Upon his demise, she discovers that a) she's loaded (her years of penny-pinching were unnecessary) and b) her uptight husband fathered a son with an apparent floozie. In the end, Julia and Hazel Marie wind up living in Julias home, along with Little Lloyd.

Miss Julia has spent a lifetime trying to comply with the rigid and austere lifestyle of her ultra-proper husband. however I can confirm that in Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind, paperback version, on pages 34 and 35 she says she was married for 44 years and met Wesley Lloyd Springer at the age of 23. Written in the first person, Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind follows the long-delayed blossoming of a childless widow of a small-town Southern banker. I rather wish Miss Julia wasn't as old as she is at the beginning of the stories and surely that would place her in her late 80s after so many books. Just picking up this novel of a feisty Southern matron finding her core of steel inspires the reader to begin humming the theme to Driving Miss Daisy (and the publicity for the comic novel hits us pretty hard with the Steel Magnolias comparison).
